Oh, the Irony!

Sometimes life is stranger than fiction, and the events from the past few days are certainly no exception.

In politics, former Senator Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services after it was reported that he had $128,000 in unpaid taxes owed to the government.

Still, the former senator was not alone.

Nancy Killefer, who President Obama nominated as his Chief Performance Officer, also withdrew her appointment just hours before. Kilefer backed out for the same reason: unpaid taxes.

To quote White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, the irony is, "You can't set a standard of responsibility but accept a different standard of who serves."

I know very little about Ms. Kilefer. However, I'm very, very, very, very disappointed by former Senator Daschle's withdrawal. Daschle has seemingly demonstrated great leadership on the Hill, serving as a minorty and majority leader in the Senate. More importantly, he has been an outspoken voice in the fight for universal health care in America. Just last year, in fact, he published a book entitled Critical: What Can We Do About the Health-Care Crisis. (I wonder who President Obama will find as his replacement.)

In Massachusetts a lesbian couple, who fought on the frontlines for legalizing gay marriage in the state, has now filed for divorce. This news breaks just three years after the couple announced they were separating.

Last, world-renowned olympian Michael Phelps was busted smoking cannabis at some party not too long ago. Although I had no clue Mary Jane was Phelps's main squeeze, it explains the swimming phenom's "competitive" eating diet, which consists of 12,000 calories a day. Phelps's menu was atypical not because he was a superathlete, but because he occasionally suffers from the munchies. (I kid, I kid!)
